Abstract
This study explores the effect of social capital on giving behavior (philanthropic effort and volunteering time). This study focuses on the social capital which functions as social motive of giving behavior, especially the cognitive aspect of social capital: trust, norm, and reciprocity. For the analysis, this study uses the Giving Korea 2014 survey data conducted by the Beautiful Foundation and Tobit model to examine the relationship between social capital, philanthropic effort and volunteering time. The findings show that norm has a positive effect on philanthropic effort and reciprocity has a positive effect on volunteering time at statistically significant level. Thus, individuals with higher conformity to social norm are more likely to have higher philanthropic effort and individuals with higher perception on reciprocity participate in volunteering and contribute more efforts in volunteering in terms of time. Unlike expectation, there is no significant effect of trust on philanthropic effort and volunteering time. Although this study has limitations caused by secondary data, it can broaden and deepen our understanding of the relationship between social capital and giving behavior and provide research social implications.
